How to wear a Fragrance……

Friday, October 1st, 2010

Did you know that fragrances can match personalities, the different seasons, occasions and gatherings and mood?  So once you have decided on the fragrance you will be wearing below is a quick guide to help you apply the fragrance.

Most common was to apply a fragrance is on the pulse points and common areas.  These are the wrists, crook of the elbow, back of the knees and neck.  If you spray, dab or spritz your wrist (pulse point) with a fragrance, do not crush the scent or rub the scent on another area, this will break the aroma and lesson its longevity.

You can also spray a small amount of the fragrance or perfume into the air in front of you and walk through it. This way your whole body will be immersed in a light spray of scent.

For the guys you can spray some cologne on the nape of the neck and shoulder for intimate moments. A woman will be pleasantly surprised by a hint of cologne along that area.

We have heard of instances that some ladies, for those romantic intimate moments wear a light spray of perfume around the cleavage. Not common however some people do.

Some people also spray perfume and fragrances (a light layer) onto their clothes. This is good if you know that you will be around smokers for example and don’t want smell of smoke if you are out all night. The only problem is, the fragrance or perfume may stain the clothes so be careful.

Doesn’t matter which way you apply your fragrance or the method you use to wear you perfume everyone has a way that works for them which is sometimes the best after all. Finally always read the product labels and its safe intructions on how to use.

Can you tell the difference between a fake and genuine perfume?

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Counterfeiters of perfume are experts and have made it relatively harder to spot a fake from a genuine perfume with the help of modern technology in the printing world. They are capable of producing almost identical replicas of all the major leading perfume brands. As a consumer you may never really know until you experience the actual fragrance. It is estimated that up to 10% of perfumes and toiletries in the market place are fakes and pose a huge problem globally, with millions of counterfeit goods being produced and sold.

Here is a few ways that may help you spot a fake perfume:

Check the name and spelling on the box and bottle. A quality bottle of perfume has been checked to perfection in packaging so there should be no misspellings or glaring mistakes. Also check to make sure the name of the designer is correctly spelled; it’s a common mistake and a dead giveaway.

Confirm you are buying from a reputable business. Ensure they have an Australian Business Number, testimonials from other customers or feedback. Most reputable business have a return policy guaranteeing that there perfumes are authentic.

Check for the correct information is printed on box. Example: Size, misspellings, logo and trademarks. You can even check the style of the printing. Also check for the batch number or barcode.

Be suspicious about bargains.  If a fragrance is too cheap it may be a fake or old stock.

Counterfeit perfume does not undergo the usual safety standards that are applied to all cosmetics and toiletries around the world. When cheaper inferior ingredients are used, these may cause allergic reactions in people with sensitive skin and could also stain garments.

Perfume does deteriorate. The time period depends on temperature, light and length of storage. Ask questions to the business if they sell fresh new stock perfumes  and  not old stale stock.

The last thing customers want is to purchase fake perfume. Sometimes the price is that cheap and inviting you may think I can’t wait to tell all my friends. You soon realise when you open the box that the colour may be off or the scent is not the same as the previous bottle you purchased.  The most efficient tip  is to be careful where you purchase your perfume and fragrance from and ensure its a trusted business.

Common ways a fragrance can be applied

Common ways a fragrance is applied

How to apply a fragrance or perfume, a frequently asked question and all of us assuming know the most common method spraying it on the wrist. The best way is to find out what works with you as everyone is different. People use different ways to apply their scent and it doesn’t matter if it’s an eau de cologne, eau de toilette or eau de parfum. Just make sure you read the labels, safety instructions and ingredients before using or applying a fragrance.

You should always keep in mind that fragrances do not have the same effect on everyone, some scents react well on certain individuals and not on others. Layering the fragrance using other products that contain the same fragrance essence will add that extra longevity to your fragrance. Using a variety of body products such as gels and shampoos with different scents creates the opposite affect by giving out a mix of smells that do not blend together.

If you spray, dab or spritz your wrist (pulse point) with a fragrance, remember too much can be overwhelming to others. Do not rub the scent onto your other wrist as this can change the scent of the fragrance a great deal and can break down the scent. You should always be careful when spraying on a perfume if you wear a watch or bracelet. The fragrance can react to any leather, plastic, metal or other materials that the jewellery is made up of.

Some people apply the fragrance on other pulse points, behind the neck, the sides of the neck, behind the ears lobes, or even behind the knees. We all know that body heat rises, some people apply perfume to the back of the knees to leave a lasting impression. Your body warmth will radiate your fragrance. Another method is allowing the fragrance to fall on your clothing however be mindful it may affect the clothing and leave stains or marks.

Everyone is different, applying the fragrance to the wrist maybe enough for a particular person and for someone else applying it somewhere else works better for them. Layering a fragrance will always give the fragrance that extra longevity.

Know your Fragrance Classifications!

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Perfumes and fragrances fall into different classifications according to their composition. Knowing a bit about these classifications will help you to decide which perfume is for you. Most people will know that there are top, middle or heart notes and base notes of fragrances. That is the initial scent of a fragrance, the settled scent and the lasting base scent.

There are five main fragrance classifications which are floral, fruity, woody, oriental and green. There are also many other classifications which have been developed as fragrances have become more diverse and complex.

Floral: The most traditional and popular classification. It can range from a linear scent of one flower or can be a veritable bouquet of flowers such as in Champs Elysees by Guerlain. Floral fragrances are more feminine and romantic and suitable for any age.

Fruity: Fruity fragrances are fresh and youthful like the Be Delicious by DKNY. Fruity fragrances are always more popular in summer.

Woody: Woody fragrances are more earthy and masculine and are an acquired taste. You either love them or hate them. They range from smoky to mossy and include scents such as patchouli, pine and sandalwood. An example of a floral woody fragrance is Miss Dior by Christian Dior.

Oriental: Oriental scents are spicy, warming and exotic such as Opium by Yes Saint Laurent.

Green: Green scents are those of cut grass and fresh leaves. An example is Fifth Avenue by Elizabeth Arden.

Other Classifications include water and marine, Tobacco and leather just to name a couple. Scents will rarely fall into one classification. There will usually be a cross over. It would be harder to find a pure fruity scent but very likely to find a floral and fruity fragrance. Same goes with a pure woody scent however more than likely you will find a woody and oriental fragrance.

Making the scent last longer on your body

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

You have just bought your favourite perfume or just purchased a new fragrance that’s just been released and you can’t wait to use it. Whatever the case is a way to make the scent last longer on your body is layering the fragrance.

Most people keep reapplying the fragrance over and over again hoping it will last longer, remain fresh and fragrant on them for a long time. This is where layering comes in. Layering means using other products that contain the same fragrance essence such as soaps, shower gels, body lotions and creams. Although most people use a variety of body products such as gels, shampoos, conditioners, body lotions and creams, after shaves, sprays and deodorants, they are not aware that using everything together creates the opposite affect by giving out a mix of smells that do not blend together. How can one particular smell stand out when so many different scents have been mixed?

In order to make your particular perfume or cologne stand out, you can layer it. Layering is better done when you use products from the same brand and with the same scent. For example, if you’re wearing Lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker compliment the perfume with the Lovely body lotion or the Lovely shower gel. This also goes for the guys. These days gift sets not only have the fragrance or the body lotion gels for the guys some gift sets come with the aftershave balms as well. Try to avoid using different scents during the onetime; this will cause a clash of fragrances which will alter the one you want to stand out.

Applying the fragrance in the right areas does help and therefore will last longer. When using other scented products try using products from the same brand and scent which layering the fragrance which will also give that longer lasting effect.
