Antonio Puig (born in 1889) set out to travel to France and England as a young man. In 1914, Antonio Puig Castelló founded the company which still bears his name today, Antonio Puig. From the very beginning he was dedicated to the perfumery and cosmetics industry. He began importing various French fragrances; it was not until 1922 that it launched a product made by the company itself. In that same year he married and had four children.
In 1940 the company's launched one of its most important products, Agua Lavanda Puig an eau de cologne. The launch of Lavanda Puig was a great success and the product gained an important position in the market. The birth of this product confirmed the company's innovative talent. In 1968, the scent Agua Brava was released which was followed in 1969 by Azur de Puig. Both of these fragrances remained best-sellers for the company for decades.
Antonio Puig expanded into Europe and North America in the 1980s and 1990s and has continued to grow quickly through various acquisitions. Antonio Puig owns two of its former major Spanish competitors, Myrurgia and Perfumeria Gal. The company is still owned by members of the founding Puig family.
Part of the company’s growth involved the creation of the perfumery and cosmetics laboratories. The company has worked closely with research laboratories and conducted its own research in the field of marketing.
Puig Beauty and Fashion Group S.L. run ten manufacturing centres, including locations in Spain, France, and Mexico. It also operates three fashion design centres, with locations in Spain, France, and the United States. The company distributes its lines to more than 150 countries worldwide with nearly 70 percent of the company’s sales coming from Europe and another 20 percent originating in the United States.
In 1981, they launched one of its most successful products, a scent called Quorum. Quorum was a hot seller in the 1980s and was eventually one of the best-selling fragrances in England. Also in the 1980’s, Antonio Puig began a relationship with the Venezuelan designer Carolina Herrerra. The company produced a copy of what Herrerra herself wore, a fragrance she mixed on her own out of jasmine and tuberose oils. The scent debuted in 1988 in many top-line U.S. department stores and eventually was sold worldwide.
