Burberry was founded in 1856 by the 21 year old Thomas Burberry. Thomas Burberry worked as a draper’s apprentice before opening his own store in cities such as Basingstoke, Hampshire and England. By the 1870’s Thomas Burberry’s business had established itself by primarily focusing on outdoor apparel. Thomas Burberry then went on to invent a durable, water resistant and breathable fabric which was called Gabardine. Thomas Burberry invented this in 1880 and in 1888, Gabardine had been patented.
At present the brand Burberry is well known across the globe as a British luxury house who manufacture fragrance, clothing and fashion accessories. Burberry is one of the few around the globe who are presented with the Company Royal Warrants by the British Royal family. The warrant allows the supplier to advertise the fact that they supply to the royal family however the supplier must not provide any details of what is actually supplied to the royal family.

The black, tan and red tartan pattern which is also known as the “Burberry classic check” was primarily used in the linings for the Burberry trench coat in 1924. In 1967 the Burberry check became a registered trademark and was broadly and more frequently used on other products by Burberry.
In 1981 Burberry launched its first male colognes called Burberry for men. To date more than 25% of all Burberry’s revenue comes from perfumes and cosmetics.
