Bvlgari

Sotirios Voulgaris began his career as a jeweller in his home village Kalarites (Greece) and his first store can still to be seen today. In 1877 he left for Corfu and then Naples. In 1881 he finally moved to Rome where in 1884 he founded his company and opened his second shop in via Sistina.

The letter "V" in the word is simply the Latin writing tradition for letter "U", so the word is pronounced simply as if it were written as "Bulgari".

The current flagship store in via dei Condotti was opened in 1905 by Bvlgari with the help of his two sons, Constantino and Giorgio. The store quickly became a place where the world's rich and famous came for the unique, high quality jewellery designs combining Greek and Roman art.

Bvlgari opened its first international locations in New York City, Paris, Geneva and Monte Carlo in the 1970s. Today Bvlgari have more than 230 retail locations worldwide. The goal to diversify the company was started in the early 1990s with the release of the Bvlgari perfume line. The company had established itself as a luxury goods brand recognised throughout the world.

During the 2001 Marriott International formed a joint venture with Bvlgari Spa to launch a new luxury hotel brand, Bvlgari Hotels and Resorts. The luxury division of Marriott operates Bvlgari Hotels & Resorts. Bvlgari opened its first hotel in Milan in 2004, and a second in Bali in 2006.

Bvlgari jewellery designs are distinctive and. In the 1970s, many of the more expensive Bvlgari products such as necklaces, bracelets and earrings were characterised by instantly recognisable by their bold designs.

Today, Paolo Bvlgari and Nicola Bvlgari, Chairman and Vice-Chairman, together with their nephew Francesco Trapani, Chief Executive Officer, manage the company's development with the intent of better serving an international market, while remaining fine and prestigious jewellers.
