Christian Dior

Christian Dior was born in 1905 in a small town of France called Grenville. He moved to Paris with his family when he was 5 years old. In 1928 Dior opened an art gallery and exposed works of very large artists such as Picasso, El Salvador Dali, Jean Cocteau and more. His family were finiancially ruined in 1929 forcing Christian Dior to close his gallery. After the death of his mother and brother, Christian Dior moved to the Soviet Union, where with the help of a friend he had a roof over his head and began his career sketching dresses and hats. A young, famous actress saw these sketches, loved them and purchased the designs. After World War II, Dior moved back to Paris and continued to sketch; his first show was 90 outfits.

Christian Dior released his first collection in 1947 after the war. The full, soft feminine designs were in stark contrast to the harsh shabby rationed clothes of the war. The new designs led Christian Dior to higher ranks of fame as well as the new line being labelled the New Look. Women loved the New Look despite many governments encouraging a boycott of it. In 1957 Christian Dior died of a sudden and unexpected heart attack. The heir to his throne as artistic director of Dior was his assistant Yves St Laurent, who introduced the trapeze dress in his first collection for the house.
