Paul Smith

Born in 1946, in the city of Nottingham of Great Britain, Paul Smith started with a job at the local clothing warehouse as a helper. His passion was sport and love for cycling. His ambition was to become a professional racing cyclist. This was not meant to be as he was involved in an accident at the age of 17 that would prevent reaching his cycling ambition.

In 1970, with little savings Paul opened his first boutique in Nottingham with the support of his girlfriend Pauline (fashion graduate) and now wife. Paul took evening tailoring classes and developed his own style and touch over the years. By 1976 Paul showed his first menswear collection in Paris under the Paul Smith label.

Today there are 12 different collections from Paul Smith, Paul Smith Women, PS by Paul Smith, Paul Smith Jeans, Paul Smith London, R.Newbold (Japan only), Paul Smith Accessories, Paul Smith Shoes, Paul Smith Fragrance, Paul Smith Watches, Paul Smith Pens and Paul Smith furniture and ‘things’. Paul Smith rugs, china, spectacles and fragrance are made under license. Designed in Nottingham and London, the Paul Smith collections are primarily produced in England and Italy while the fabrics used are mainly of Italian, French and British origin.

Paul Smith continues to be an integral part of the company; he is both designer and chairman. Paul Smith is continually involved in every aspect of the business and as a result, Paul Smith Limited retains a personal touch often lost in companies of a similar size.

A great British success story, Paul Smith's style of genuine sense of humour and mischief mixed with his love of tradition and the classics cool clothes and distinctive accessories have earned him a place in the forefront of British fashion.
